General notes

This painting was purchased before 1938 by the original owner, the family of Roger and Nancy Hunt, who knew Flora Scales in Nelson, New Zealand.

Correspondence with the original owner, Alister Hunt, to B. de Lange, 04.07.1983, “As you will see, the picture is a quiet little scene of (I think) the foreshore at Monaco, Nelson, with a man and a pick. I always liked its quiet serenity achieved with considerable economy of apparent effort.”

Current owner notes that the watercolour is washed over pencil.
