General notes

Drawn at the Rotorua Masonic Village, New Zealand, where Flora Scales was a resident from 26 October 1978 until just before her death in January 1985.

Scales drew this to demonstrate the structure underlying her painting Untitled [Jacob] [BC084] as she was talking to M. de Lange, 1983. Of Untitled [Jacob] [BC084] Scales noted, “The painting is unfinished...I moved to the Masonic in the middle of it [October 1978] and never achieved what I hoped for in it. I was trying to analyse the structure of his head – to show the unique character of this head, rather than his unique character.” While talking, Scales was drawing to demonstrate her explanations resulting in Untitled [Child’s Head] [BC141].
