“Flora Scales, a Christchurch artist, is known for her work in a modernist manner derived from a cubist style. Scales was fortunate to study in Munich in the 1920's with the famous teacher Hans Hofmann who was a cubist painter and a strong teacher of approaches to art based on Cézanne's concepts and cubism. Flora Scales derived a great deal from his teachings and her work combines intellect with a rich colour sense and a strong awareness of modernist approaches in Art. Credit is always given to Scales for her profound knowledge and the important influence she was on Toss Woollaston who as a young man, studied her notes from her classes in Munich and passed on to him ideas and concepts that were to stay with him.”
