Exhibition reviews

‘Art in War Time’, Evening Post, 4 October 1918, pg 3, “Fortunately for visitors, Miss Flora Scales is again an exhibitor, not only of horses, but of cattle this time, and some excellent equine studies in pen and ink.”

‘N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts’ by “The Lay Figure”, Dominion, 7 October 1918, pg 8, “Miss Flora Scales contributes two of her well-known and ever welcome studies of horses. Nos. 27 and 28. both painted with that fine, realistic grip of colour, and the relations of light to the objects painted which always characterise this lady's work. Note also the little landscape, No. 29, "Elm Avenue, Taita"; in its way a little gem, although the brilliance of the red on the right of the roof may be a trifle overdone.”

‘The Art Exhibition’, Dominion, 7 October 1918, pg 6, “"Elm Avenue, Taita," £2 2s., Miss Flora Scales”

‘Academy of Arts The Exhibition – Another Look Around’, New Zealand Times, 8 October 1918, pg 8, “Flora Scales has in “Dolly Gray" a fine study of a sleepy old horse, and "The Valley Road" is also good.”

‘Academy of Fine Arts’ by “The Lay Figure”, Dominion, 12 October 1918, pg 9, “Another local lady artist, Miss Flora Scales, has a slight but vivacious little sketch, "Morning on the Beach." It is a crisp, vigorous little drawing, but the face in one of the figures is very crudely suggested.”

‘Academy of Arts – Another Look Around’, New Zealand Times, 14 October 1918, pg 7, “A couple of pen and ink “Studies of a Cart Horse’’ by Flora Scales are very good”

‘N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts’ by “The Lay Figure”, Dominion, 17 October 1918, pg 9, “Some pencil drawings of homes [should read horses?] by Miss Flora Scales are also worthy of attention”
