Exhibition reviews

‘N.Z. Academy’, Evening Post, 10 October 1916, pg 2, “Miss Flora Scales is well represented in a congenial subject—working horses. These she draws well, and with force and fidelity. The "Midday Rest" (119) is Miss Scales's best work in oils, remarkable for the skilful foreshortening of the drowsy horse, also for the clever manipulation of the light and shade, and the bright touches of colour furnished by the hens. In "The Wet Evening" (86), a rather daring impression in colour, Miss Scales has drawn a horse attached to a hansom cab, making pace along a shop-lit street; but, clever as it all is, one asks, where are the wheels to the cab? Miss Scales's etching of horses, "The Load of Wood" (133), is a both strong and capable work.”

She is the Lucy Kemp Welch of New Zealand, and her work is never negligible. This year, however, I seem to detect a little carelessness in the drawing. "After the Midday Meal," No. 119, is her best. The impressionistic study of a hansom cab is, on the other hand, far from successful.”
