New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Sketch Exhibition 1920
This was the third iteration of the annual New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Sketch Exhibition. They did not have catalogues until 1932 so no information is recorded as to the entries Flora Scales produced to exhibit. Four artworks are specifically mentioned in reviews, Coaling, The Small Fisherman, Amokura in the Bay and Gliding Stream.
‘Sketch Exhibition’, Evening Post, 21 May 2020, pg 4, “Among the regular exhibitors there are represented Messrs. Menzies Gibb, J. M Madden, Nugent Welch, W. A. Bowring, Mrs. E. K. Robison, Miss D. K. Richmond, Miss Violet Nelson, Miss Stoddart, Miss Arndt, W. Tiller, A. Bender, Miss Flora Scales, H. M. Gore, E. Killick, Mrs. Elizabeth Kelly, and G. Sedgwick.
Miss Scales has grasped the idea of the show. She sends in oils a sketch called "Coaling," a hackneyed subject of shipping, but treated in a most original yet truthful way, remarkable for its warm hazy atmosphere and suggestion of movement. Miss Scales's honest pencil studies of ducks should not be overlooked.”
‘Sketch Exhibition’, New Zealand Times, 22 May 1920, pg 9, “Next one turns to the sketches shown by Miss Flora Scales, whose work grows finer every year. “The Small Fisherman” is a lovely bit of sunshine, though the boat is slightly out of drawing, and the “Amokura in the Bay” has quite an Italian atmosphere, but finest of all, perhaps, is the sketch entitled “Coaling,” (already sold) with wonderful effects of light in the shadow, and yet only a sketch. Judged by her work this year Miss Scales should go far.”

Academy of Fine Arts’ by “The Lay Figure”, Dominion, 24 May 1920, pg 6, “In three of her contributions, Miss Flora Scales returns to the harbour subjects she favoured last year, deserting for the nonce her old-time choice of animal studies. In "Coaling" she gives a delightful little picture. The pearly greys of the atmosphere, the convincing suggestion of buoyancy in the water, and the quite poetic character of the treatment generally, make this modest little study most fascinating, Of the other sketches, a little harbour study, quite Hilderlike in its treatment of the vessel at anchor, and a charming little plein air study, "Gliding Stream," with its strong sunlight effects, should find many admirers.”
