"In the exhibition The scene in which I find myself…Albrecht's Magenta/Yellow (1982) hung at the head of the stairs on the floor above Scales's Mixed Flowers (c1965 -1970), as if with outspread wings it hovered, watchfully guarding and making shelter for the smaller painting below. The colours and shapes are striking in their correlation.
Albrecht had probably seen this painting by Scales at the Auckland City Art Gallery exhibition Helen F V Scales, 1975-1976.
It is a beautiful example of an artist making links with history by means of images that have been carefully conserved in her art memory; that consciously or subconsciously rise to become part of the genesis of the new painting." – B. de Lange, 2021

Included in The scene in which I find myself / Or, where does my body belong: 50 years of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Collection at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand, in 2019-2020 [see Related images]. A project developed by New Zealand artist Ruth Buchanan which spanned the entire contemporary art museum, each of its galleries was dedicated to a 10-year span. Mixed Flowers was included in the gallery dedicated to the 1970s (artwork no. 2). Acquisition notes from the catalogue for this exhibition details, “This work was acquired from the artist after it was exhibited in her first official solo exhibition, a retrospective held at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1975. The exhibition toured to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery the following year.”
