General notes

Signed and dated at time of original purchase, 1978.

Second title, Cubist Drawing of a Gent, used by Dunbar Sloane, Wellington, New Zealand, 2015.

Third title, Cubist Drawing, taken from the exhibition Flora Scales at The Suter Te Aratoi o Whakatū, Nelson, New Zealand, 2018.

This page is probably from Scales's Untitled [Esquisse sketchbook] [BC118] [see Related image 2] which she used while studying in Germany and France. There are several examples of this simplified, schematic type of composition in the sketchbook.

Toss Woollaston in correspondence with B. de Lange, 29.06.1983, wrote, “And in the self portraits [Portrait 2 [BC065], Portrait 3 [BC066], Portrait 1 [BC120]] the construction is again part of the expression, and, greatly, a means of it. Whereas the drawing dated c 1930 [Untitled [Cubist Drawing of a Seated Man] [BC098]] wears its construction like plates of armour, the recent works have plenty but it doesnt [sic] show.”
